It is with sadness that I report the passing of Mrs. Emilia Brączyk (1910-2019) of Toruń, the second oldest resident of the Kuyavia-Pomerania Voivodeship and one of the oldest living people in Poland who died at the age of 108 years and 6 months. Emilia Brączyk was born on August 25, 1910 in Odense, Denmark; she was a real ambassador of two nations. Although she lived in Pomerania, Poland, since 1925, she never forgot Danish. She also knew German. In 1932, she married Antoni. The Brączyk family had one daughter, Teresa, who died in 2010. During the World War II, the family was resettled to Kraków, where Emilia Brączyk heroically supported the Polish underground state. After the war she returned to Pomerania; she ran a farm in Małe Radowiska in the Wąbrzeźno County. After the death of her husband, she lived with her daughter in Bydgoszcz. In 2017, she moved to her niece in Toruń.

In October 2018, I had the honor of visiting Mrs. Brączyk. A few days later, Emilia Brączyk was honored with the medal of the Marshal of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of regaining independence, being the oldest centenarian of the region honored with this decoration.

I extend my most condolences to the family, especially to Maria Ludwikowska, a niece who looked after Mrs. Brączyk and was her guardian angel until the end.
